THE NORTH SEA - In the Time of the Sugar Pines CD [MF34]
Brad Rose has been making his own music since the mid 90s and has been a member of such bands as the Juniper Meadows, the Golden Oaks, and the Cone Bearers. The North Sea is his solo experimental / ambient / improvisational folk music project and, like much of the folk music in the movement, looks to bring together the style of folk music with the feeling, sound, and aura of nature. In this project, Rose mixes nature field recordings - birds, air and leaves - with a wide variety of stringed instruments.
THE GOLDEN OAKS - Paradise CD [MF32]
Paradise is free form Applachain abstraction from the folk/minimalist duo of Keith Wood and Brad Rose. Originally released in a here today, gone tomorrow CDR edition on UK label Barl Fire, this batch finds these autumn alchemists adding 2 more songs to the previous offering of seven soul-soothing hymnals to the wind and the trees and the sky and the leaves. Tranced-out falsetto drifts atop supple strumming to create traditional backwoods folk, stressed and compressed by the walls around them (or lack thereof), making it softer and airier. Their fractured take on folk is complimented by multi-layered bowed string and harmonium drones, created from that same soft and airy palette. As the smokey reverb of the drones reaches resonance, the spectrum fills and amplitudes peak in spaced-out bliss.
SURFACE OF ECEYON - Revenge of Dragon LP [MF30]
Featuring the dense and swirling psychedelic sounds of Adam Forkner (White Rainbow/ Jackie-O Motherfucker/ VVRSSNN/ Yume Bitsu), Dick Baldwin (Towering Giant/ Landing/ Dragon), Daron Gardner (Towering Giant/ Landing), Phil Jenkins and Aaron Snow (Paper/ Landing), Revenge of Dragon continues Surface of Eceyon's "entropic quest for transcendental enlightenment via wah wah pedals, big amps and long, long songs."
BLACK FOREST/BLACK SEA is the Providence duo of Jeffrey Alexander (mostly guitar) and Miriam Goldberg (mostly cello). They play free-form music that draws from folk traditions. We wnstrumentalist michael shannon loaded his car full of various instruments, from a dilruba to a harmonium, and drove the long drive from seattle to san francisco for the turnstone sessions. on a warm august afternoon in 2005, tom carter, robert horton, and shannon opened a few ice cold irish stouts and let the music bubble up and turnstones for about 5 hours. the peak moments from this session were culled together for this release. assembled and edited by horton. from a one-time pressing of 650 hand-numbered copies housed within photo-adorned arigato! paks.
The vinyl debut of his long-running fucked-jazz unit Owl Xounds (formerly OWL SOUNDS). Taking their psychedelic rhyhmic core of drummer Kriney (LA OTRACINA/BLIZZARDS/RUST IONICS/CASTANETS/THE PLACES) and upright bassist Gene Janas (Screamin Jaw Hawkins/Bern Nix's SEDITION ENSEMBLE) to any reedsman up for the challenge, the boys explode it all with Austrian sax-ist Mario Rechtern, who has been invlolved with free-music since the late 60's playing in the REFORM ART UNIT (with Sunny Murray, Linda Sharrock, & Leena Conquest) and more recently as a guest in the Weasel Walter QUARTET/SEXTET/TRIO.
Truly and honorably a post-ESP expression, it is much a post-SST expression. While the instrumentation and framework are a staple of the jazz/improvisaion tradition, the directions and velocities at which OWL
XOUNDS exist are just as informed of the worlds of hardcore/punk and experimental noise.
Pinko is not a traditional distributor. We do not possess any merchandise or take part in the physical transfer of goods. Instead we are a collection of labels who have combined forces to more directly take part in the distribution of our goods. Pinko does not take in any money; money is sent directly from the buyers to the producers, hopefully meaning both lower prices for consumers and higher royalties for artists.
Pinko Distribution is currently a small enterprise. Labels interested in joining forces should contact us at the email address below. Currently we are being selective on who we invite to join us.
